How can we help?

Quick answers about using Settlecircle. Can't find what you need? Contact us and a real person will reply.

Getting started

Do I need an account?

No. You can use Settlecircle as a guest: when you first open it, it asks what to call you and which currency you use, and everything stays on your phone.

Sign in with your email when you want to sync across your phones or share circles and expenses with friends. There's no password: we email you a 6-digit code. Go to Profile → Sign in or create account.

Do my friends need to install Settlecircle?

No. You can keep track for the group on your own phone, and add anyone just by name. If they do join, you'll both see the same expenses and balances, and they can add their own. See Friends & sharing.

To remind someone, open Home → Nudge friends or a friend's page and tap Nudge. Friends on Settlecircle get a reminder notification with the amount (once a day at most). For anyone else, Settlecircle copies a friendly message, ready to paste into WhatsApp, iMessage or any chat.

What's the difference between a circle and a friend?

A circle is a group with its own expenses and balances, like "Goa Trip" or "Flatmates". A friend is a person you split with. The same friend can be in many circles, and you can also add expenses directly with a friend, outside any circle.

A friend's page shows what they owe you (or you owe them) across all circles combined.

What is sample data?

Sample data is a ready-made example with three circles, four friends and some expenses, so you can explore before entering your own. You can choose it during setup, or later in Profile → Load sample data.

Careful: loading sample data replaces everything currently in the app. To clear it afterwards, use Profile → Erase all data.

Is Settlecircle free?

Yes. It's free to download and has no ads. Everything you do with friends (circles, expenses, syncing and settling up) will always be free. If we ever add optional extras to help cover our running costs, what's free today stays free.

Adding & splitting expenses

How do I add an expense?
  1. Tap the big + button, or Add expense inside a circle.
  2. Type a title and the amount. A category is picked automatically from the title.
  3. Choose the circle (or a friend) and the date. To change who paid, tap Paid by you → Change.
  4. Under Who's in?, tap people to include or leave them out.
  5. Choose how to split, then tap Split it!
What are the five ways to split?
  • Equally: everyone who's in pays the same.
  • Exact amounts: type each person's amount; they must add up to the total.
  • Percent: give each person a percentage; they must add up to 100%.
  • Shares: give each person a number of shares, e.g. 2 for a couple and 1 for everyone else.
  • By item: list the items on the bill and tick who had each one. Any tax or tip is shared in proportion to what each person ordered.
What happens to leftover cents?

When an amount doesn't divide evenly, Settlecircle gives each person the rounded-down share and then hands out the leftover cents one at a time. For example, $100 split three ways is $33.34, $33.33 and $33.33. Every split adds up to exactly the total; nothing is lost or invented. Try it on the home page.

Can I add an expense that someone else paid?

Yes. When adding the expense, tap Change next to Paid by you and pick the person who paid. Balances update for everyone involved.

How do I edit or delete an expense?

Tap the expense in a circle or in Activity to see its details, then choose edit or delete. If you delete something by mistake, tap Undo on the message that appears.

How do categories work?

Settlecircle comes with nine categories, such as Food & drink, Travel, Rent & home and Bills. Titles like "pizza" or "uber" pick a category automatically, and you can always change it.

To add your own, or rename and recolour existing ones, go to Profile → Categories.

Balances & settling up

How do I read my balances?

Amounts in green with a + are owed to you. Amounts in red with a − are what you owe. "All square" means nobody owes anything. The total on Home combines every circle and every friend.

How do I record that someone paid me back?

Tap Settle up on Home, in a circle, or on a friend's page. Choose who paid whom; the full balance is filled in for you. Change it for a partial payment, add a note if you like, and save.

Can I settle with a friend across all circles at once?

Yes. Open the friend's page and settle up from there. Settlecircle records the payments needed to clear every circle you share in one go.

What does "Simplify payments" do?

It reduces the number of payments needed to settle a circle. If Aarav owes Meera $20 and Meera owes you $20, Settlecircle suggests that Aarav pays you $20 directly. Everyone ends up in the same place with fewer transfers.

Turn it on or off when creating or editing a circle.

Can Settlecircle send or receive money?

No. Settlecircle only keeps track of who owes whom. Pay each other however you normally do (cash, bank transfer, UPI, PayPal and so on), then record the payment in the app.

A balance looks wrong. What should I check?

Balances are calculated from your full history every time, so they always match your entries. If a number looks off, check in Activity:

  • the right person is set as the payer (Paid by);
  • the right people are included in the split;
  • a payment wasn't recorded twice or in the wrong direction.

Fix the entry and every balance updates instantly.

Currencies

Which currencies are supported?

US Dollar, Indian Rupee, Euro, British Pound, UAE Dirham, Australian Dollar, Canadian Dollar, Singapore Dollar and Japanese Yen.

Can I change my currency?

Every circle has its own currency, chosen when you create it. To change it, open the circle, tap ••• and edit it. Amounts aren't converted: a circle's $40 becomes €40, so this is for fixing a wrong choice rather than converting.

Profile → Default currency sets the currency for new circles and for expenses outside circles.

Can I use more than one currency?

Yes. You can have a London trip in pounds and a flat in rupees, and expenses outside circles can be in any currency: tap the currency symbol when adding one. Balances in different currencies are always kept separate and never added together, so Home shows your main currency first with the others listed under it.

A single circle uses one currency. For a trip that mixes currencies, convert amounts into the circle's currency as you add them.

Friends & sharing

How do I add a friend who uses Settlecircle?

You both need to be signed in. Go to Friends → Add friend. One of you shows your QR code and the other scans it, or share your friend link in any chat. You'll each appear in the other's friends straight away.

How do I invite someone who isn't on Settlecircle?

Add them by name and split with them as usual; they're shown as Not joined yet. When you're ready, open their page and tap Send invite to share a link. When they install the app, sign in and accept, they see every expense you've included them in, with the same balances. Invites last 30 days.

How do I block someone?

Open their page, tap the ••• menu and choose Block. You stop being friends and they can't add you again. They aren't told. Expenses you already share stay, so balances still add up. To unblock, go to Profile → Blocked people.

I added someone by name, and now they've joined. How do I connect them?

Add them as a friend first (QR code or link). Then open the name you added, tap Already on Settlecircle? and pick them. Everything you'd added for that name now belongs to their account.

Who can see my expenses?

Everyone in a circle sees that circle's expenses and payments. Expenses outside circles are seen only by the people in them. Friends you haven't shared anything with only see your name. Each expense shows who added it and who last edited it.

How do I remove a friend?

Open their page, tap the ••• menu and choose Remove friend. To stop them adding you again, choose Block instead.

Your data & privacy

Where is my data stored?

As a guest, only on your phone, in the app's private storage. When you're signed in, it's also saved in your account on our servers, so it syncs across your phones and with the friends you share with. The bottom of Profile tells you which applies. See the privacy policy for details.

Can I sync between devices or share a circle with friends?

Yes, once you sign in. Sign in with the same email on each phone and everything stays in sync, usually within seconds. Friends you add to a circle or expense see it too. You can keep using the app offline; changes sync when you're back online, and Profile shows anything still waiting.

What happens if I delete the app or get a new phone?

If you're signed in, just install Settlecircle on the new phone and sign in with the same email. Everything comes back.

As a guest, deleting the app deletes its data. A full device backup (iCloud Backup or Google backup) usually restores it on a new phone; without one, it can't be recovered. Sign in before you switch phones to be safe: when you sign in, the app asks whether to bring this phone's data into your account.

How do I delete my account or erase everything?

Go to Profile → Delete account and confirm. Your account and everything on the phone are deleted. Expenses you share with friends stay with them, but your name is removed. As a guest you can also use Profile → Erase all data to clear the phone. Neither can be undone. See Delete your data for more.

Is it okay to add my friends' details?

Settlecircle only needs a name. Email and phone are optional and are just for reference; Settlecircle never uses them to contact anyone. If you're signed in, they're saved in your account, and people who share a circle or expense with that friend can see them. Please only add details your friends would be happy for you to keep.

App settings & troubleshooting

How do I switch between light and dark mode?

Go to Profile → Appearance and choose Light, Dark or Auto. Auto follows your phone's setting.

How do I turn off vibrations?

Turn off Profile → Haptics. Settlecircle also respects your phone's system vibration settings.

The animations are too much. Can I reduce them?

Yes. Settlecircle follows your phone's accessibility setting: Reduce Motion on iPhone (Settings → Accessibility → Motion) or Remove animations on Android (Settings → Accessibility). With it on, screens appear without bounces.

Does Settlecircle support larger text?

Yes. It follows your phone's text size setting, within a range that keeps every screen readable on small phones.

Something isn't working. What should I do?
  1. Make sure you have the latest version from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Fully close Settlecircle and open it again.
  3. Still stuck? Contact us with your phone model, its system version, the app version (shown at the bottom of Profile) and what happened. Screenshots help a lot.

Still need a hand?

We read every message and usually reply within a couple of working days.
