Terms of Use

Last updated 10 October 2026

In plain words

  • Settlecircle helps you keep track of shared expenses. It doesn't move money or give financial advice.
  • Accounts are optional. As a guest your data lives only on your phone; with an account it's saved and synced, and shared with the people you choose.
  • Check important amounts yourself before you pay or ask for money.
  • Be kind and lawful with what you share and the information you add about other people.

This summary is for convenience. The full terms below are what apply.

1. Agreement

These Terms of Use ("Terms") are an agreement between you and Settlecircle ("we", "us") about your use of the Settlecircle mobile app (the "App") and the website at settlecircle.app (the "Website"), together the "Service". By downloading or using the Service you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.

You must be old enough to agree to these Terms where you live. If you're under that age, a parent or guardian must agree on your behalf.

2. What Settlecircle is (and isn't)

Settlecircle is a tool for recording shared expenses and working out who owes whom. It:

  • does not transfer, hold or process money, or connect to any bank or payment service;
  • is not a bank, payment provider, accountant or financial, tax or legal adviser;
  • does not create any legally binding debt. Amounts in the App reflect what you and your friends have entered and agreed.

Calculations are based entirely on the information you enter. We work hard to make them accurate, but please review amounts before relying on them, especially large ones.

3. Your licence to use the App

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to download and use the App on devices you own or control, for your own non-commercial use, in line with these Terms and the rules of the store you downloaded it from. The App is licensed, not sold, to you.

You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell or rent the App; reverse engineer or try to extract its source code, except where the law allows this despite this restriction; or remove any copyright or other notices.

4. Your data and responsibilities

  • Your content is yours. Everything you enter in the App belongs to you. If you sign in, you give us permission to store, sync and display it only as needed to run the Service for you and the people you share it with. We don't claim any other rights to it.
  • Your account. Accounts are optional and use your email address. Keep access to that email secure, because anyone who can read it can sign in. You're responsible for what happens in your account, and you can delete it at any time in Profile → Delete account.
  • Sharing. When you add people to a circle, expense or payment, they can see it and, depending on what it is, add to or change it. Anyone who has your friend code or one of your invite links can use it, so share them only with people you mean to. Shared items may stay with your friends after you delete your account (see the Privacy Policy).
  • Guests and backups. As a guest, your data is only on your phone, so we can't recover it if your phone is lost, reset, or you delete the App or erase your data. We work to keep account data safe, but please keep your own records of anything important.
  • Information about others. If you add details about other people, you're responsible for having a lawful reason to do so and for keeping it accurate. Please add only what's needed to split expenses with them.
  • Keep your device secure. Anyone who can unlock your device can see your Settlecircle data, and, if you're signed in, add or change things in your account.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to use the Service:

  • for anything unlawful, fraudulent or harmful, including money laundering or deceiving others about amounts owed;
  • to harass, threaten or intimidate anyone, including through reminder messages;
  • to send unwanted invites or friend codes, or to add people or information you have no reason to;
  • to create accounts automatically or in bulk, or to get around limits, such as the number of friends or invites per day;
  • to interfere with or disrupt the Service, or try to access accounts or data that aren't yours.

6. Our intellectual property

The Service, including its design, code, the Settlecircle name and logo, text, graphics and illustrations, is owned by Settlecircle or its licensors and protected by intellectual property laws. Except for the licence above, these Terms don't give you any rights to them. The App includes open-source components that are provided under their own licences.

7. Feedback

We love hearing ideas. If you send us suggestions or feedback, you agree we may use them to improve Settlecircle without owing you anything, and without using your personal information beyond what's described in our Privacy Policy.

8. App Store and Google Play

Your use of the App must also follow the terms of the store you downloaded it from.

If you downloaded the App from Apple's App Store

  • These Terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the App or its content.
  • Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the App.
  • If the App fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price (if any). To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the App.
  • Apple is not responsible for any claims by you or a third party relating to the App, including product liability claims, claims that the App fails to meet legal or regulatory requirements, or consumer protection claims.
  • If a third party claims the App infringes their intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are responsible for investigating and handling that claim.
  • You confirm you're not in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as a "terrorist supporting" country, and you're not on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
  • Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you.

If you downloaded the App from Google Play

Google is not a party to these Terms and is not responsible for the App. Google Play's Terms of Service also apply to your use of Google Play.

Price and optional purchases

The App is free to download. We may later offer optional extras that you can buy in the App. If we do, the price and what you get will be shown before you pay, payment will be handled by Apple or Google under their terms (including their refund rules), and features that were free before stay free.

9. Disclaimers

We provide Settlecircle "as is" and "as available". To the extent permitted by law, we make no warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free or meet your needs, or that calculations will be suitable for any particular purpose.

Nothing in these Terms limits rights you have as a consumer that can't be limited by contract under the law where you live.

10. Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by law, we won't be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, money, profits or goodwill, arising from your use of, or inability to use, the Service, including disagreements between you and other people about amounts owed. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for the App and any in-app purchases in the 12 months before the claim, and 50 US dollars.

Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not fully apply to you. We don't exclude liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that can't be excluded by law.

11. Ending these terms

You can stop using the Service at any time by deleting your account (if you have one) and the App. We may suspend or close an account, or end your licence, if you seriously breach these Terms. We may also change, pause or stop offering the App or Website. If we stop running the online service, we'll give at least 30 days' notice where we can, so you can keep a record of your data; data on your phone will remain yours. Sections that by their nature should survive (such as 6, 9, 10 and 13) continue after these Terms end.

12. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms, for example when we add features. We'll change the "Last updated" date and, for significant changes, give notice on the Website or in the App. If you keep using the Service after changes take effect, you accept the new Terms.

13. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the place where Settlecircle is established. If you're a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country you live in and can bring a claim in your local courts.

Before starting any formal dispute, please contact us so we can try to sort it out informally.

If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect. If we don't enforce a right straight away, we haven't given it up. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service.
